I
recently received a call from a customer who wanted to let me
know that my little $149 video switcher was giving his $9,000
production video switcher a real run for the money. It
was not the first time I have heard this, and I hope it will
not be the last.
Analog switching is
difficult. There is an art to the design, requiring
careful attention to signal isolation, and component
placement. An incorrectly designed controller leads to
signal noise, and it is very difficult to troubleshoot.

ASEL 16 Input 2
Output Switcher

models. The most popular configuration, ASEL16X2, has 16
inputs and 2 outputs. Any input can be switched to any
output under RS-232 control. This model is often used
for large array video switching as found in many security
applications. Many users purchase one or two additional
boards to simultaneously switch audio signals with the video.
8S2S
8 Stereo Input, 2 Stereo Output Switcher
The 8S2S has 8 stereo
inputs and 2 stereo outputs. Any stereo input can be
switched to any stereo output. This model is most
commonly used in applications where switching stereo audio is
desired. It can also be used to switch 8 monaural audio
and video signals simultaneously.
Applications
The ASEL is most widely used in
computer-controlled security video switching applications, but
has slowly found its way into the hands of companies who
develop interactive systems for demonstrating A/V equipment in
stores (such as consumer car and home stereo systems).
