Quick Start Kits provide you with everything you need to use the IOAD168 as quickly as possible.  The kit includes a serial cable, a regulated +5 VDC power supply, and an RSIOadapter board (shown above) that adds a DB9 serial and power connector the the IOAD168.

The IOAD168 was designed to offer desktop and embedded programmers a convenient way to access low-level digital logic (TTL/CMOS) I/O and A/D functions using simple RS-232 serial commands.

The IOAD168 has two user-programmable TTL/CMOS I/O data ports and a single 8-Bit Output Only data port.  Port A (8-bit I/O) can also be used as a 5-Channel Analog to Digital converter.  The IOAD168 command set supports A/D read function by simply selecting the channel and resolution (8-bit or 10-bit).

The IOAD168 allows user bit control of all ports, allowing you to mix input, output, and A/D functions on a I/O port.  The IOAD168 command set supports commands reading the on/of status of all bits at once (for parallel to serial encoding) and for writing bytes of data to each port (serial to parallel conversion).

Other commands allow for interface to standard 16-button keypads, up to three character LCD or VF displays, as well as the complete line of NCD expansion modules.  Expansion modules add capabilities to the I/O ports on the IOAD168.  Supported expansion modules include the popular AD1216, used to add 16-channels of 12-bit A/D onto a single I/O port.  The PAR24 expansion module is also supported, adding 24-bit parallel output only to any I/O port.

Terminal functions allow the IOAD168 to operates as a 2-way interface between the user and a host computer in 256 different locations.  Key Presses on a 16-button keypad can be displayed directly on the LCD screen OR hidden with the letter "X" (useful for PIN and Pass Code requests).  The integrated keypad is fully programmable, allowing the user to define each of 16 keys + one hidden PIN character.

Supported communication rates include 2400, 9600, 19.2K, and 38.4K baud.  The command set is very easy to implement, simply send ASCII character codes to control the functions of the IOAD168 board.  Some functions, such as A/D, send data bytes back to the computer.  Our example software shows how to handle all communication to the IOAD168 using Visual Basic.

The IOAD168 is E3C compliant, allowing communication to 256 NCD devices in any combination.  The IOAD168 allows users to program the E3C device number into the controller using a
